Illness / Accidents

Illness at the Nursery

  1. A child who is unwell should not remain within the Nursery group. This child will be unable to cope with normal nursery demands and can put other children, staff and parents at risk of infection.

  1. If staff considers a child is unwell – has a fever, early infectious stages of a cold etc, the Nursery will immediately contact parents. It is essential that the contact telephone numbers and health information in each child’s file are current. The nursery health guidelines (written in consultation with BVC doctors) recommend at least one fever free day before returning to school, or 48 hours after stomach infection.

Illness at home

  1. The Nursery recommends that all children have at least one fever-free day before returning from an illness. It can be important to re-gather strength after an illness, and nursery days are strenuous.

  1. Infectious illnesses or conditions should be reported to Nursery staff by telephone if the child is absent from the nursery that day. Essential information will then be passed on to other families in the co-operative. General health information is provided in the “Illness Guidelines” booklet, distributed to all families upon joining the association.

  1. If a child develops an infectious illness parents will be required to keep their child at home / in alternative care, until the illness or infection is no longer contagious.

  1. Telephone the nursery before nine 'o 'clock if a child is absent due to illness.

Health Administration
  1. Any accidents that occur at the Nursery, will be documented by a member of staff (notebook in the first aid cupboard), and reported to collecting adult. If an accident occurs which requires immediate medical / dental attention, parents will be contacted by telephone and arrangements made to meet the child and a teacher at the hospital / dental clinic.

  1. The nursery requires, and will provide the opportunity for, permanent staff members to regularly renew their First Aid proficiency qualifications.

  1. One member of staff will be delegated responsibility to check and replenish first aid equipment at regular intervals. This includes First Aid kits to be taken on outings.

  1. Medicines to be administered during the day by staff require written authority from parents.
